Description:  Sodium is a principal electrolyte outside the cells and it is important for maintaining extra cellular fluid balance.  It is important for nerve function as well as absorption of carbohydrates and amino acids.  A sodium deficiency can lead to hyponatremia which can cause headaches, vomiting, coma, and death.  Dosages in excess of 2.3 g/day are not recommended.
